Tom Garnder Takes Over Southern Maine Volleyball Program
GORHAM, Maine – Four-time Desert Sky
Region Champion coach Tom Gardner (Cave Creek, Ariz.) has joined
the ranks of the coaching staff at the University of Southern Maine
and will lead the Huskies' women's volleyball team for the Fall
2011 season. Gardner's hiring was announced this week by USM
Director of Athletics Al Bean.
"Tom is a welcome addition to our coaching staff," noted Bean. "He
has had tremendous success in his coaching career and he is
enthusiastic about putting USM volleyball in a position to be
competitive within the challenging Little East Conference."
Gardner comes to Southern Maine after a highly successful campaign
as the varsity coach at Cactus Shadows High School (2007-2011)
where he compiled a record of 45-1 in the Desert Sky Region,
finishing as champion four times. His teams placed second in the
state twice and third and fifth place finishes once. Gardner also
served as a recruiter and scout for Trevecca Nazarene University in
Nashville, Tennessee from 2008-2011 and as the Club Director for
Club Summit Volleyball from 2005-2011.
"I am very excited at the opportunity to build the volleyball
program at the University of Southern Maine," commented Gardner. "I
am anxious to take the court and begin working towards success. I
hope to attract serious students who have a passion for playing
volleyball and a competitiveness and will to win. Each athlete will
play an integral part in the growth and development of the
program."
Gardner earned his Master's of Education in Educational Leadership
from Northern Arizona University in 2007 and his bachelor's degree
in Advertising in 1993. Gardner also earned a Teaching
Certification from Northern Arizona in 1997.
Student-athletes interested in playing volleyball are invited to
an informational meeting on Sunday, August 28 at 9:30 a.m. at Hill
Gym in Gorham, Maine.
