Texas-Dallas Opens ASC Play On Low Note, Comets Fall At Mary Hardin-Baylor
BELTON, TX (09.13.11) -
For the first time since the 2008 season, the UT Dallas has fallen
to an American Southwest Conference East Division opponent,
suffering a 3-1 defeat at Mary Hardin-Baylor to open the 2011 ASC
schedule. The Cru downed the Comets 26-24, 25-23, 13-25, 25-13,
Tuesday night.
Junior Hillary Baugh led the Comets in double-figure kills but the Comets could not take control of the match, dropping two tight sets to open play. After falling 26-24 in the opening game and 25-23 in the second set, UTD finally found its rhythm in the third stanza, dominating UMHB, 25-13, but could not continue its momentum as the Comets lost by that same score in the fourth and deciding set.
The Comets (now 3-3, 0-1 ASC) hit .188 as a team, compared to just .129 by the host Cru, but still ended the match on the losing end. Baugh had a match-high 16 kills while Halea Williams added 15 kills and Dana Hilzendager had 13 kills. Freshman setter Hayden Higgins had 40 assists while junior libero Amy Gunter had 32 digs, both match highs.
UMHB (now 5-3, 1-1 ASC) got 11 kills from Sara Hayward while Kimberly Smidovec added 10 kills.
The Comets had not lost to an ASC East Division team since a four-game loss at East Texas Baptist on Sept. 27, 2008, a span of 26 matches including the postseason.
UT Dallas returns to action Friday night when the Comets host LeTourneau in their home opener. Match is set for 7 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
