Vassar Volleyball Programs Part of National Adopt-A-Highway Project

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 27, 2011) – The Vassar College men’s and women’s volleyball team have adopted a two mile stretch of highway from Route 55 between Burnett Blvd and Noxon Road, near the Vassar College campus. As caretakers of this parcel of highway, the Brewers take their civic responsibility seriously. The women’s team recently completed its first clean-up, with the men’s team to follow when not in season.

"The volleyball program has always embraced the idea that we need to be responsible members of our community, so we were excited to have this opportunity, especially for a stretch of road so close to home,” said head coach Jonathan Penn. “It was a tough job - gathering trash in the side of the highway is not much fun - but after we finished and were returning to campus it was incredibly gratifying to see the numerous large piles of bagged trash that we had collected. The team worked hard and had a great spirit. It is nice to do something that has such a tangible and visible outcome."

The Adopt-A-Highway program, organized by the New York State Department of Transportation, is part of a national effort waged by thousands of communities to enhance the aesthetics of highways by keeping them clean.

Adopters are asked to commit to picking up litter along the section of state highway, which is usually two miles long, at least four times a year for two years. Adopters may mow the roadside or plant flowers and other NYSDOT-approved vegetation. Adopters may also keep the proceeds they earn from any recyclable trash.
