KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College men's volleyball team survived a five-set thriller on Wednesday night at Tarble Arena as the Red Men held on to defeat the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders, 3-2, to remain the lone undefeated team in the Western Division of the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League.

The win moves Carthage to 8-0 in the MCVL and 9-1 overall, while MSOE falls to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the league.

"Obviously we would have liked to be a little more comfortable in our victory tonight.  We went up against an outstanding opponent tonight and knew we were going to be in for a dogfight," said men's assistant volleyball coach Ryan Thompson.  "They lead the nation in kills per set for a reason, which you saw a lot of tonight and they brought it from the service line.  We knew we really had to bring our game tonight.  I'm really proud of the fight that our guys showed in the fifth set after dropping a pair of tough sets in three and four.  In the end, it's great to come out on the good side tonight."

Griffin Shields led the Red Men with 19 kills on the night, while hitting .250 for the match.  Marc Hansen also tallied double-digits in kills with 12.  Matt Reinsel set up 45 of the Red Men's 47 assists in the match, moving the ball around to give the Red Men a .208 to .205 hitting advantage in the match.

The reigning MCVL Defensive Player of the Week, libero Cody Bolan, followed up hit impressive 34-dig performance from Saturday with a 20-dig night in Wednesday's win to lead Carthage.

On the play of the Red Men Thompson said, "Griffin Shields really took over in the fifth set.  Came up with big swings when we needed them as well as a pair of huge blocks to open the fifth.  Cody was outstanding again on defense as usual and Matt Reinsel moved the ball around very well for us to give us a lot of good hitting opportunitites."

Carthage opened the match by edging out the first two sets, 25-22, 25-23, to jump to a commanding 2-0 lead over the Raiders.

MSOE answered back however, with a pair of decisive wins behind poor Carthage hitting performances.  In the third set Carthage registered just eight kills along with eight errors to hit .000 in the set to the Raiders .214.  MSOE followed that up with a fourth set that the Raiders tallied 19 kills on their way to a .316 hitting percentage, while Carthage hit .229 behind 12 kills.

Carthage rebounded however in the fifth set though with their best hitting performance of the night for the Red Men to claim the match, 15-8.  Carthage hit .316 with seven kills to only one error, while limiting MSOE to just six kills and forcing six errors, a .000 hitting percent, to claim the match in the fifth.

The Red Men opened the set with a pair of blocks by Griffin Shields and Max Bongratz to give Carthage a clutch 2-0 lead in the fifth.  Carthage would build an 8-3 lead before switching sides and eventually extended it to as many as seven, as the Red Men cruised to the fifth set victory.

Bongrats led the Red Men at the net in the match with nine blocks and Griffin Shields added seven as the Red Men out-blocked the Raiders, 13-9.

For MSOE, Logan Baerenwald led the match with 27 kills in the match.
