#5 NYU's At-Large Hopes Take Major Hit with Losses

The New York University men's volleyball team was defeated by Eastern Mennonite University and Marymount University (VA) at the Marymount Tri-Meet in Arlington, VA, on Saturday, March 4.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) #5-ranked Violets (9-6) fell in four sets to the #9-ranked Royals (19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-23), before taking the #14 Saints to five sets (21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 16-14).

NYU got off to a fast start against Eastern Mennonite, as the Violets took a 8-7 lead in the first set and didn't relinquish it as they took the opener 25-19. The Royals narrowly won the back-and-forth second set 25-23. The Violets scored the first point of the third before dropping five unanswered as EMU won the set 25-16. In the fourth set, NYU came back from a five-point deficit to make it 23-24, but it was not enough as the Royals took the decisive set 25-23.

"Tough day against the top two teams in the CVC Conference. Overall, our play was good, but our serving was somewhat deficient today," explained Head Coach Jose Pina. "We had quite a few errors, but the problem was that we were not able to put these two teams under duress with our made serves, something we had been doing all year long."

The Violets once again won the first set against Marymount, never trailing in the opener as they won 25-21. After the Saints responded with a 25-22 second-set victory, NYU took the third set in a close 25-23 decision. The Violets led 16-15 in the fourth set, but Marymount went on a late run to win the set 25-18. In the fifth set, NYU trailed 8-5 before closing the gap to make it 11-11, but Marymount ultimately took the set in a 16-14 result.

"As for positives to carry from these two matches, the play of Ethan Talkov versus Marymount was really good. He had eight kills and hit at a 72.7% clip. Also, the continued outstanding offensive play of Alex Li continues. He had 45 kills in nine games overall, for a five kills per-set average," explained Pina. "We are aiming to get back to our winning ways tomorrow, as we look forward to a strong weekend UVC matchup the following weekend."
