The Roger Williams University Women’s Volleyball team won its seventh consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship after defeating Gordon College 3-0 Saturday afternoon.
Roger Williams has now won the CCC Championship every season since 2009, capping off a second consecutive year going undefeated against conference opponents.
The Hawks began the match scoring the first two points in the opening set. Though Gordon remained in striking distance throughout the set, Roger Williams led wire-to-wire to take the first set. RWU never let the Fighting Scots come closer than two over the set. The turning point came with RWU leading 13-11, at which point the Hawks scored five straight points to take a seven-point advantage. RWU would ultimately take the set by a 25-17 score.
The second set saw a much closer battle between both teams with five ties over the early portion of the match. Neither team led by more than two points over the first half of the set. With the Hawks leading 11-10, RWU began to pull away, scoring six of the next eight points and forcing a Fighting Scot timeout. After the timeout, Gordon managed to creep back in and pull back within one (17-18), but the Hawks ended the set on a 7-2 run for the 25-19 win.
The third set was the closest of the match between the two teams. RWU scored the first two points before Gordon came back with seven of the next three points. RWU tied the game three different times after that, finally breaking an 11-11 tie with back-to-back points. After a Fighting Scot timeout, the Hawks scored four straight points as part of a 9-3 run, leading to another Gordon timeout. Roger Williams earned the title-clinching point on a Gordon attack that sailed long, giving RWU the 25-18 win.
Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) led RWU with 14 kills, along with five digs. Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.) finished with two kills, three service aces, and seven digs, while Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) led RWU with 14 digs. Josalyn Benson (Phoenix, Ariz.) notched 28 assists for RWU in the win.
Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) led Gordon with nine kills, while Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) added five kills and four digs. Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) handed out 19 assists, while Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) added nine digs.
Roger Williams (19-11) will find out its NCAA Tournament opponent on Monday, while Gordon (21-10) awaits a potential ECAC Tournament berth.
